♦ Introduction of Industrial Waste Management System
Manifest status management system was introduced and operation begun at Kashima, Akashi, and Fuji factories. The system enabled a reduction in the burden related to industrial waste management, as it consolidated management of manifest form issuance, status of processed forms, permission validity period for waste transportation and disposal contractors, and calculation of discharged waste amount and its disposal costs. We plan to apply this system in all factories and laboratories.
♦ Storage Management of PCB Containing Devices
The storage management of PCB containing devices is carried out in line with the law, at Fuji, Mie, Akashi factories and Tokyo R&D Laboratory, as of March 2006. The PCB waste disposal registration of the devices to Japan Environmental Safety Corporation has been completed at those 4 factories. A transformer replaced at Kuki R&D Laboratory was identified as containing a tiny amount of PCB. Therefore, it is also stored and managed in the same way as other PCB containing devices until the national disposal policy is clearly defined.
♦ Investigation on Asbestos Operation
In 2005, much attention was given to health damage suffered by workers having dealt with asbestos and new laws were rapidly considered. ADEKA investigated its work that includes asbestos handling and workers who might have had exposure to it in operation. Two possibilities of asbestos exposure were determined; asbestos diaphragm replacement process when diaphragm method was in use for sodium chloride electrolysis and mixing operation with additives when evaluating PVC stabilizer at former Ogu Factory. We will continue to follow up, for example, by providing medical examinations, even though it is estimated that the negative health impact is minimal in both cases.
♦ Inspection of Asbestos Containing Waste Treatment
Asbestos containing insulating material was removed and disposed at Kashima Factory in FY 1995 and 96. Inspection was conducted, to find whether its process was in line with laws and industrial guidelines. As a result, it was assured that the whole process, from prior notification to final disposal of the removed waste material, was in compliance and records have been stored properly.
♦ Inspection of Asbestos Containing Material and Countermeasures
Inspection was conducted to determine whether air-borne asbestos containing materials are used in ADEKA facilities, including all factories, laboratories, and company residence. It was found that there were cases where asbestos containing materials were used in insulation materials for tanks, pipes, and buildings, and as acoustic absorbent. Environmental investigation and analysis of materials were carried out and results mapped. Countermeasures, such as removal and containment, will be implemented depending on urgency.
